Electric Fat Bike Range Calculator

How far will your electric fat bike really go? Enter your battery size, weight, terrain, hills and temperature to get an estimated range band in miles. The method is explained in full below the calculator.

Estimated range24–30 miles

This is an estimate, not a test result. Real range depends on your bike, battery age and riding.

How the calculator works

This calculator uses the same rule we use across Peak Fat Bikes: a fat tire e-bike on flat pavement at a moderate assist level uses roughly 20–25 Wh per mile. Battery capacity in watt-hours (volts × amp-hours) divided by that figure gives the baseline range band. Each setting below then multiplies the energy used per mile. These factors are our own conservative assumptions for planning. They are not measured by us, and they are not test results.

SettingFactor on Wh per mileWhy
Rider + cargo weight+8% per 50 lb above 200 lb, −8% per 50 lb below (limited to 0.88–1.40)More mass takes more energy to accelerate and climb.
Assist levelEco 0.8 · Low 0.9 · Medium 1.0 · High 1.2 · Mostly throttle 1.4Higher assist means less of your own pedaling and higher speeds.
Average speed (instead of assist)0.6 + 0.4 × (speed ÷ 16 mph)²Air resistance rises roughly with the square of speed.
TerrainPavement 1.0 · Gravel/dirt 1.15 · Snow 1.5 · Sand 1.6Loose or soft surfaces add rolling resistance.
HillsFlat 1.0 · Rolling 1.15 · Hilly 1.3 · Steep 1.5Climbing costs more energy than descending gives back.
Tire pressureRoad 1.0 · Medium 1.05 · Low float 1.12Softer tires grip and float better but roll with more resistance on firm ground.
Temperature (applied to usable battery)68°F+ 100% · 50–67°F 95% · 32–49°F 85% · 14–31°F 75% · below 14°F 65%Lithium-ion batteries deliver less usable capacity in the cold.

Assumptions: a healthy battery charged to 100%, a fat tire e-bike of typical weight, and no long stops in the cold. The factors multiply together, so a heavy rider on snow in winter can see a fraction of the baseline. Older batteries, strong headwinds and frequent stop-and-go riding will lower range further. Advertised “up to” figures from manufacturers usually assume ideal conditions and the lowest assist level, so they are often higher than this estimate.
